Wölfe bügeln nicht
Interessant, wie sich die Sprache im Laufe der Zeit verändert. Und wie sie dadurch die Werte der zeitgenössischen Kultur widerspiegelt. In den letzten paar Jahren sind mir zum Beispiel zwei Bedeutungsveränderungen aufgefallen, die ich immer öfter mitbekomme und die es ganz schön in sich haben: einmal das Adjektiv "aufwendig," was heute weniger mit Arbeitsaufwand zu tun hat sondern jetzt ein neues Wort für teuer ist. Zum zweiten wird das Nomen "Abgrenzung" oder auch als Verb "sich abgrenzen" mehr und mehr im Kontext gesellschaftlichen Klassendenkens benutzt. Bei 'aufwendig' geht es aber glaub' ich um mehr als nur Geld, 'aufwending' scheint auch etwas mit dem guten Geschmack feiner Leute zu tun haben, also teuer + edel = aufwendig. So nach dem Motto, was der neureiche Pöbel konsumiert mag teuer sein, aber was sich Leute mit gehobenem Geschmack gönnen ist 'aufwendig.' Man will halt zur Insidergruppe des 'richtigen' Marken-und Brandingverständnisses gehören. Besonders interessant finde ich, dass im Wort 'aufwendig' durchaus positive Konnotationen mitschwingen, vielleicht nicht gerade sympathieerregender Art aber doch sowas wie Respekt und Achtung. Jedenfalls bringt es eine ganz andere Beziehung zum Statusdenken zum Ausdruck als zum Beispiel das Wort "protzig," das ich immer noch sehr schätze als Signalwort bewussten Unangepasstseins. Das heisst also, "conspicuous consumption" wird in der Regel nicht mehr ironisch beleuchtet. Gut, kann ich akzeptieren. Ich möchte aber bitte nicht mitmachen müssen. Da halte ich es lieber mit meinem alten Freund Lyle Lovett und grenze mich ganz bewusst ab von der High-brow-society:

It sure is interesting how language evolves over time. And how it reflects the values of contemporary culture. In the last few years, I have noticed a couple of shifts in the meaning of words that are used in the new sense more and more and that carry a punch: the adjective "aufwendig" used to mean elaborate but is used now in the sense of lavish. Another word is the noun "Abgrenzung" (distinction) or as the verb "sich abgrenzen" (to distinguish yourself) which are used increasingly in the context of social class. From what I can discern, 'aufwendig' is now the preferred word for expensive. But there is more at stake than just money, the word seems to also indicate the refined taste of upper class people, so it is a sort of combination of expensive + high brow. Like, newly rich trash can consume expensive stuff, but the things refined people indulge in are 'aufwendig.' You want to belong to the insider group who knows the 'right' brands. It's interesting to me that the word carries positive connotations, maybe not exactly evoking sympathy but respect and prestige certainly are present. Definitely a different perspective towards status thinking than the word "protzig" (pretentious), which I still enjoy using as a signal for conscious non-conformity. So, "conspicuous consumption" is no longer looked at ironically. Okay, I can accept that. But I'd like to be excused from that game. I'd rather stick with my old buddy Lyle Lovett and 'distinguish myself' from the high-brow-snobs:
